I'm surprised you understood "matey" have you been to the uk? chum has kind of changed its meaning lately, kind of "gay" also "matey" is a bit sarcastic, like you might say in an arguement.

hmm maybe chum has changed a bit, folks used matey intercvhangabley with mate when I was there last summer.
